4.1 How long can disposable gloves be worn?
Disposable gloves are fundamentally intended for single use. Even high-quality models lose their protective effect after a certain period of time. Recommended durations depend on material, activity and exposure to chemicals.
- General recommendation: change gloves after a maximum of 30 minutes.
- Intensive medical settings (RKI): maximum 15 minutes wearing time.
- When handling chemicals: never exceed the tested breakthrough time as per EN ISO 374.
- Change immediately if: the glove is damaged, visibly soiled or permeated with moisture.
The longer a glove is worn, the higher the risk of micro-perforations and of skin irritation caused by trapped moisture.
4.2 What should be observed when wearing disposable gloves?
For maximum protection, it is not only the choice of glove that matters – behaviour when putting gloves on and taking them off, as well as during use, plays a crucial role.

4.3 Removing disposable gloves correctly – step by step
To avoid contact with potentially contaminated outer surfaces, disposable gloves must be removed correctly. Proceed as follows:
- Hold the first glove on the outside at the wrist.
- Pull it slowly forwards so that it turns inside out and remains in your hand.
- Insert a clean finger under the cuff of the second glove.
- Pull this glove off forwards as well – the glove already removed will be enclosed inside it.
- Both gloves now lie inside one another with the clean inner surface on the outside.
- Dispose of the bundle of gloves in general waste.
- Afterwards: wash or disinfect your hands thoroughly.
This technique reliably prevents contamination of the hands.
4.4 Can disposable gloves be disinfected?
As a basic principle: disposable gloves are not disinfected; they are changed. There are only a few exceptions, for example in medical settings where the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) explicitly permits this.
Disinfection is only permitted if:
- several routine activities are carried out on the same patient.
- several blood samples are taken in succession.
- no contaminating activities take place in between.
Not permitted for:
- tears, damage or visible soiling
- contact with chemicals
- switching between different patients
- food processing
Important: alcohol-based disinfectants can attack the material and significantly reduce the protective effect.

As a rule, disposable gloves must always be disposed of with general waste after use – regardless of whether they are made of nitrile, latex, vinyl or PE. As most materials cannot be recycled, they must not be disposed of via lightweight packaging collections.
