FFP masks for protection against droplets, aerosols and particles
In addition to medical mouth protection, FFP masks can be used to protect yourself and others from viruses in epidemic and pandemic situations. Particle-filtering half masks - so-called FFP masks (English for Filtering Face Piece) count as personal protective equipment (PPE) under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. They protect the wearer from droplets, aerosols and particles. In epidemic and pandemic cases, FFP masks protect the wearer as self-protection, but also provide external protection. FFP masks with filters only offer a low level of external protection, as exhaled aerosols are not intercepted by the filter material, but are merely slowed down and swirled to a certain extent by the valve.
As with a medical mouthguard, an FFP mask must comply with special requirements of technical standards and laws. The focus here is particularly on the filtering performance of the mask material based on the European standard EN 149:2001+A1:2009 (tested with aerosols). FFP2 masks must filter at least 94% and FFP3 masks at least 99% of the test aerosols. They are therefore proven to provide effective protection against aerosols as well. The test standard is printed on the surface of the FFP mask, together with the CE mark and the four-digit identification number, the so-called notified body. In addition, a manufacturer's name or trademark must be printed on the mask. The manufacturer's name and address must also be printed on the packaging. Attached manufacturer's certificates and images of certificates should be trustworthy and conclusive even at first glance. The expiry date guarantees until when the filter performance is at least given with proper storage. The following rule of thumb applies to the wearing time of an FFP mask: For an FFP mask without an exhalation valve, the recommended maximum wearing time is 75 minutes with a subsequent recovery period of 30 minutes.
Respirators protect in 3 classes against aqueous and oily aerosols, smoke and fine dust at work. Their protective function is standardised throughout Europe according to EN 149. They are called particle-filtering half masks or fine dust masks, and are divided into protection classes FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. Filtering half masks are mostly made entirely of non-woven fabric with rubber straps and a mouldable nose clip to ensure an optimal fit. Always bear in mind: Beard and hair growth can affect the tight fit of FFP masks!
Class | Total leakage | Protective effect against particle sizes (max. 0.6 μm) and application range |
---|---|---|
FFP1 | Maximum 25 %, mean values not greater than 22 % | Protection against non-toxic and non-fibrogenic dusts; maximum concentration up to 4 times the maximum occupational exposure limit value |
FFP2 | FFP2 Not more than 11%, average values not greater than 8% | At least 95% protection against harmful dusts, mists and fumes; filters for solid and liquid particles; against harmful substances at concentrations up to 10 times the maximum occupational exposure limit value |
FFP3 | Not more than 5 %, average values not greater than 2 % | At least 99 % Protection against toxic substances as well as droplet aerosols, carcinogenic substances, radioactive substances, enzymes, micro-organisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi and their spores); against harmful substances whose concentration reaches up to 30 times the maximum workplace limit value. |
Effect of FFP masks:
FFP masks reduce/mitigate the burden on the lungs. Smoke and fine dust are trapped from the ambient air and not inhaled. FFP3 respirators also prevent potential pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungal spores from being swirled in the air by aerosols (droplet formation) when sneezing and/or coughing, and people in the vicinity from becoming infected/infected with the pathogens. However, this only applies in full to FFP masks without a valve.
More about FFP masks:
Filtering half masks are classified as FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3 depending on the retention capacity of the particle filter. The higher the number, the greater the protective effect.
FFP 1 R or NR (R means "reusable" and NR means "not reusable").
FFP 2 R or NR (minimum standard for COVID-19 - recommendation of the Robert Koch Institute, TRBA 250)
FFP 3 R or NR (Against harmful and carcinogenic dusts, water- and oil-based fumes and aerosols, against radioactive particles, airborne biological agents of risk group 3 and enzymes, very suitable for use in epidemic and pandemic situations)
Wearing recommendation for FFP masks
What should FFP2 masks do? FFP2 masks without a valve not only protect those who wear them, but also those around them. They offer self-protection (personal protective equipment, which is what these products were originally made for), but also a certain degree of protection from others (which is not part of the certification, however), which benefits us in epidemic and pandemic situations. It is not a medical product! When breathing, humans emit aerosols - a mixture of air and tiny floating droplets that can also transport coronaviruses. Every second, a person emits about 100 of these particles when breathing, 200 when talking and as many as 20,000 when sneezing. Masks of class FFP2 must retain at least 94 percent of the aerosol particles from the air - this is required by the standard DIN EN 149. The test specifications of this standard require a test of the filter performance as well as the tight fit. If the seal fit is not optimal, leakage can occur and thus lack of safety against infection with viruses. At the same time, the standard describes quality requirements and test methods. Important parameters for the user are: the filter effect, breathing comfort and fit/seal fit. Another important point is whether harmful substances are contained in the material. All our FFP masks are tested and certified with regard to the above points.
- FFP masks must comply with the legal requirements of DIN EN 149, otherwise no adequate protection can be guaranteed.
- FFP masks should be selected to fit the user in order to achieve a very good tight fit.
- FFP masks with straps behind the head (one strap at the top of the back of the head, one strap at the bottom of the neck) as well as with a nose clip should be preferred, as they offer a significantly better tight fit at the edge of the mask.
- FFP masks should guarantee at least >92% seal. According to EN 149, the total leakage must be <= 8% on average.
- Wearing an FFP mask is not recommended for persons with respiratory diseases or for children, as these groups of persons cannot achieve the breathing performance due to the tight fit.
- It should be noted that the required tight fit of an FFP mask may not be achieved for beard wearers. The protective effect will be impaired or even cancelled.
- An FFP mask without a valve should not be worn for longer than 75 minutes without interruption, after which a break of approx. 30 minutes is required.
- When used correctly, an FFP mask filters viruses from the air breathed by the person wearing it. The filter performance depends on the filter class.
- Reprocessing is not provided. The duration of use of an FFP mask is approx. 8 hours (DGUV regulation 112-190). This applies to use at the workplace.
