Tensile Strength
Force at break (tensile force at break) is the resistance of glove material to tensile loading until failure. It is expressed in Newtons (N) and measured per EN 455-2 in a defined tensile test (per ISO 37).
Minimum values per EN 455-2:
- Latex: minimum 6 N (before and after ageing)
- Nitrile (NBR): minimum 6 N
- TPE: depending on formulation, at minimum comparable to EN 455-2 requirements
- Vinyl (PVC): minimum 3.6 N
Higher tensile strength indicates a mechanically more durable glove. For surgical procedures or mechanically demanding tasks, products significantly exceeding minimum values are preferable.
Tensile strength and elongation at break are assessed together: a glove requiring high force but with low elongation breaks quickly under sudden load. The combination of both values fully describes mechanical behaviour.
After ageing test (EN 455-4): values must still meet minimum requirements after simulated storage.
