The light protection symbol shows a stylised sun and is standardised in EN ISO 15223-1. It indicates that light impairs product properties or performance.

Mechanism in gloves: UV radiation supplies the activation energy for oxidative chain scission in the polymer. Combined with atmospheric oxygen and ozone, surface microcracks form that reduce force at break and leak-tightness. Natural latex is considerably more sensitive because of its double bonds; saturated materials such as TPE are largely unaffected.

In practice: carton packaging normally provides adequate light protection. Critical situations are storage against window fronts, opened packs in dispensers exposed to direct sunlight, and proximity to ozone sources such as electric motors or UV disinfection units. The ageing test to EN 455-4 does not simulate UV exposure.

Frequently asked questions

Why are latex gloves particularly light-sensitive?

Natural latex consists of cis-1,4-polyisoprene with reactive double bonds. UV radiation and ozone attack precisely there and cleave the polymer chains. Nitrile is partially saturated and therefore more resistant; TPE is largely unaffected.

Is outer packaging sufficient light protection?

Normally yes. Closed cartons reliably block UV radiation. Problems arise with opened packs in open dispensers, storage against window fronts, and proximity to UV disinfection units.

Does the EN 455-4 ageing test account for UV exposure?

No. EN 455-4 uses thermal ageing and does not simulate UV or ozone exposure. The resulting use-by date therefore applies only to light-protected storage as specified by the manufacturer.
