ISO 18889
ISO 18889 closes a gap in the classical chemical protection standards. EN ISO 374-1 tests with 18 defined pure chemicals, whereas pesticides are complex formulations of active substance, solvent, emulsifier and wetting agent. These adjuvants can markedly alter permeation compared with the pure substance.
Test approach: the standard provides for testing with formulations and with diluted spray liquors. It distinguishes application scenarios such as mixing the concentrate, applying the product and re-entry work on treated areas, each carrying a different exposure level.
Classification: gloves are assigned performance levels describing the permitted use. A high rating for concentrate handling does not automatically mean suitability for all application scenarios.
Context: pesticide gloves are PPE Category III and are additionally tested to EN ISO 21420 and usually to EN ISO 374-1.
Frequently asked questions
Why is EN ISO 374-1 insufficient for pesticides?
Because EN ISO 374-1 tests with pure chemicals, whereas pesticides are formulations containing solvents, emulsifiers and wetting agents. These adjuvants can substantially alter permeation compared with the pure substance.
Which application scenarios does ISO 18889 distinguish?
Essentially mixing and decanting the concentrate, applying the diluted spray liquor, and work on already treated areas. Each scenario carries its own exposure level and its own requirements.
Which PPE category applies to pesticide gloves?
Category III. Pesticides can cause irreversible health damage, so a Notified Body and ongoing quality surveillance are required.
