PSA Cat II

PPE Category II covers equipment protecting against risks that are neither minimal (Category I) nor serious/irreversible (Category III). The scope is broad and covers many common PPE products.

Typical Category II products:

  • Mechanical protective gloves (EN 388) against abrasion, cut, puncture
  • Safety footwear SB/S1/S2/S3 (EN ISO 20345)
  • Industrial protective helmets (EN 397)
  • Protective clothing against rain and wet conditions (EN 343)

Conformity assessment for Category II:

1. EU type-examination by a Notified Body (mandatory)

2. Ongoing production surveillance by the Notified Body is not mandatory (distinction from Category III)

The Notified Body identification number must appear on the product and packaging.

Distinction from Category III: Category II risks are controllable and do not cause irreversible damage. Once a risk can lead to severe or permanent harm, it moves into Category III.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PPE Category II and III?

Category II: intermediate risks, EU type-examination by Notified Body, no ongoing production surveillance. Category III: serious/irreversible risks, Notified Body + ongoing production surveillance (or regular product checks).

Which standard applies to mechanical protective gloves (PPE Cat. II)?

EN 388 is the standard for mechanical protective gloves. EN 388 gloves are standard PPE Category II. Exception: if they also provide chemical protection (EN ISO 374), they become Category III.

Must the Notified Body number be visible on Category II PPE?

Yes. The four-digit identification number of the Notified Body that conducted the EU type-examination must appear on the product or its packaging - directly after the CE mark.
